The Author

John Clements began visiting Africa in 2000, to train and equip missionary leaders and learners. Over the next decade, he regularly provided training conferences in Burkina Faso. During this time, he developed and honed the Maize Plant Discipleship Syllabus.

  • In 2008, in discussion with Burkinabé missionary leaders, he made the decision to publish Maize Plant Discipleship, with the aim of making it practical, relevant and accessible to leaders and learners in African Contexts.
  • In 2013, he was awarded a Doctorate of Missiology (Contextual Missiology) from Fuller School of Intercultural Studies, Pasadena, USA.


  • John has also presented elements of Maize Plant Discipleship in Wales, Scotland, Canada and Kenya.
  • For over 25 years, John has worked bi-vocationally to facilitate his intercultural missionary involvements: as a structural engineer, running an online design and print service, managing property and freelancing.
  • Whenever he is able, John enjoys being in the countryside, hill and mountain walking and bird-spotting, especially amongst the nearby Brecon Beacons National Park.
